Melaka: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed his desire for ongoing cooperation between the Unity Government and UMNO-Barisan Nasional (BN) at the Federal level, underscoring the importance of political stability and the prosperity of the people.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar, who also serves as the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, emphasized that political decisions should prioritize the nation's welfare over personal interests, positions, or anger. He stressed the importance of making decisions that are in the best interest of the people and the country.
"With recent developments, questions have arisen about our relationship with UMNO and BN. I believe we must deliberate carefully and exercise wisdom in our decision-making process. We choose stability and the prosperity of the people through economic growth, and we choose to maintain our partnership with UMNO-BN at the Federal level to uphold these principles," Anwar stated during his winding-up speech at the PKR National Congress 2026 held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC).
Anwar clarified that his stance reflects his personal position, while the decision to remain in the Unity Government ultimately lies with the leadership of UMNO and BN. However, he assured that the government and his party are prepared to face any eventuality that may arise from political shifts, indicating a readiness to adopt a firmer stance if necessary.
"Their choice is theirs to make! As for us, as a party dedicated to our cause, we stand ready for whatever comes our way. If confrontation is necessary, then we are prepared," he declared.
Anwar further highlighted the need for wisdom and caution among all parties, warning against extreme measures that could jeopardize the stability of the Unity Government. He reiterated that the formation of the Unity Government was born out of political awareness and a commitment to national interests, placing stability above divisive politics.
He also affirmed that his personal relationship with Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi remains positive, expressing confidence that any differences could be amicably resolved. Anwar noted the absence of negative views at the Federal level regarding the cooperation, contrasting this with the situation at the state level.
Employing the Malay proverb 'Terbakar kampung nampak asap, terbakar hati siapa yang tahu', Anwar alluded to the complexities of political developments, suggesting that underlying realities may not always be visible to the public. He called for rational, wise, and national interest-driven assessments of political moves, cautioning against hasty or excessive actions.
The prime minister expressed gratitude towards DAP, Amanah, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for their support of the current cooperation within the Unity Government. "I thank them. Their request is that we continue this relationship until the end of the term, perform our duties diligently, safeguard stability, and advance the country's development and economy," he concluded.
