Kuala Lumpur:Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged parents to take a more active role in their children's upbringing amid concerns over negative social influences, including drug abuse, and broader challenges affecting young people's well-being.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar made these remarks after Friday prayers at Al-Muqarrabin Mosque in Bandar Tasik Selatan, where he interacted with schoolchildren, following a Cabinet meeting that discussed mental health and autism.
Anwar emphasized that parents should not delegate the responsibility of raising and educating their children entirely to the government or schools. He stressed that family involvement is essential in safeguarding their development and future.
He highlighted the importance of parental awareness regarding their children's daily activities, such as studies, homework, curfews, and social circles, particularly those that might expose them to harmful influences.
Anwar expressed concern that some parents may be unaware of their children's involvement with drugs or neglect of academic responsibilities. He also noted calls for government action but reiterated the necessity for parents to fulfill their responsibilities.
Mental health and autism were among the topics discussed at the Cabinet meeting, underscoring the need for collective efforts to address challenges affecting children and families. Anwar emphasized that cooperation between parents, families, schools, and the government is crucial in ensuring children receive proper guidance and support.
While acknowledging the government's role in addressing social and developmental challenges, he insisted that parents must remain directly involved in shaping their children's behavior, values, and future.
