New delhi: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is preparing for significant bilateral meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to the Indian capital for the 18th BRICS Summit this weekend. Besides Modi and Putin, Anwar is also scheduled to meet with leaders from Iran, Kazakhstan, and Ethiopia on the sidelines of the Summit.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia is participating as a BRICS Partner Country in this year's Summit, which is hosted by Modi under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'. The focus is on strengthening resilience, economic cooperation, and trade and investment reforms. Anwar, accompanied by key ministers, will present Malaysia's views on fostering an inclusive international system while highlighting the importance of the Global South's voice.
Malaysia's Charg© d'Affaires, Deputy High Commissioner Sharifah Ezneeda Wafa, emphasized that BRICS has the potential to enhance economic capabilities, given its market size encompassing 3.88 billion people and a combined GDP of US$29.85 trillion. She noted that BRICS serves as a platform for exploring opportunities in trade, investment, technology, and digital transformation.
The Summit presents the highest-level platform for BRICS member and partner countries to discuss global governance, sustainable development, and economic cooperation among other key issues. Anwar is expected to deliver a National Statement on shaping inclusive global growth and will meet industry leaders to discuss investments in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and technology among other sectors.
The BRICS group, initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has expanded to include South Africa and other countries, with Malaysia participating as a partner country. Anwar's visit also extends to Keralam, where he will engage in talks to strengthen bilateral relations and explore strategic collaborations across various sectors.
Malaysia's trade with India experienced a slight decline in 2025, yet exports saw a modest increase mainly due to higher exports of non-metallic mineral products. Bilateral investments between Malaysia and India have grown, with significant contributions from companies like Petronas' unit Gentari and UMW Group.
Anwar's engagements highlight Malaysia's commitment to fostering international cooperation and addressing developmental challenges through strategic partnerships.
