Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will hold a meeting with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today, marking the main event of his two-day official visit to the island republic. Anwar's official programme is set to commence at the President's Office at 9 am local time with the Official Welcoming Ceremony at Republic Square, followed by a private meeting with Muizzu.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the discussions between the two leaders are anticipated to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on trade, investment, and tourism. Additionally, they are expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. The meeting will also serve as a platform to explore new avenues of cooperation, with a subsequent Malaysia-Maldives delegation meeting aimed at further expanding bilateral ties.

Anwar and Muizzu are also scheduled to witness the exchange of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) concerning defence and Islamic affairs before addressing a joint press conference. The Prime Minister's itinerary includes courtesy calls on the Vice President of the Maldives, the Speaker of the People's Majlis, and the country's Foreign Minister separately at Niva Kurumba in the afternoon.

The visit will also see Anwar engaging with the Malaysian media during a press conference prior to attending an official luncheon hosted by Muizzu. Anwar is set to return to Malaysia from Velana International Airport the following afternoon, concluding his official visit.

Malaysia and the Maldives established diplomatic relations in 1968, with cooperation spanning trade, investment, and people-to-people relations. In 2025, the Maldives emerged as Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade valued at RM792 million and Malaysia's exports to the Maldives accounting for RM786.2 million.
