Kuala lumpur: Thailand hopes the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits will serve as a platform to advance peace dialogue for Myanmar while also concluding Thai-Cambodia discussions to strengthen bilateral relations, said Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sihasak expressed Thailand's expectations to resolve ongoing issues with Cambodia to progress in the bilateral relationship. He emphasized the importance of addressing Myanmar's situation, especially given the upcoming elections, with hopes for a credible election that contributes to peace.
Sihasak, who was appointed as Foreign Minister on September 19, highlighted the importance of strengthening ASEAN's mechanisms and unity to confront shared regional and global challenges. He noted that the summit is happening amidst numerous global crises, and emphasized the need for ASEAN's cohesion and effective mechanisms to tackle these challenges.
On July 28, a significant meeting took place in Putrajaya, hosted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai successfully defused tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border, resulting in a ceasefire. This achievement was seen as a major success for ASEAN, preventing broader military conflict and ensuring civilian safety.
The situation in Myanmar remains a complex issue, involving approximately 20 ethnic armed groups seeking autonomy or independence since 1948. With over 135 recognized ethnic groups and various governance aspirations, achieving peace is a challenging task.
Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair this year, will host the 47th ASEAN Summit from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. This marks the fifth occasion Malaysia has chaired ASEAN since its establishment in 1967, with previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
