Kuala lumpur: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is advocating for the integration of safety intelligence, including artificial intelligence (AI), data, and collective expertise, to prevent aviation accidents and work towards the objective of zero fatalities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud emphasized the necessity for the aviation community to leverage available resources, knowledge, and expertise to preemptively identify and mitigate safety risks. This call to action follows a recent helicopter crash in Sarawak that resulted in five fatalities.
Norazman stressed that safety must be a personal responsibility for everyone involved in the aviation industry. During his keynote address at the Malaysia Aviation Safety Seminar (MASS) 2026, he shared his personal commitment to safety and urged others in the industry to adopt a similar mindset. He highlighted the importance of individual accountability and responsibility in maintaining safety standards.
He pointed out that safety intelligence allows the aviation community to analyze vast amounts of information, such as records, audit materials, and safety data, which traditional methods may not effectively process. The MASS 2026 seminar, he noted, gathered over 500 participants with a combined experience of approximately 5,000 years, offering a wealth of knowledge that could be transformed into actionable intelligence to enhance aviation safety.
Norazman also acknowledged the significant role that technologies like AI can play in aviation safety. However, he cautioned that their ultimate purpose must be to prevent loss of life and support the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) goal of zero fatalities. He expressed optimism that, through the collective efforts of the aviation community, achieving zero fatalities is possible.
He concluded by urging all aviation stakeholders to make safety a personal commitment and to prioritize it in their responsibilities. His message underscored the importance of holding safety dear and keeping it at the forefront of industry operations.
