Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will seek the cooperation of the Malaysian Prison Department to record the statement of a former Felda chairman currently serving a prison sentence. This move is intended to assist an ongoing investigation into the assets and investments of the FELDA Investment Corporation (FIC).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman stated that the statement is crucial due to a connection between certain asset purchases and FIC investments currently under scrutiny. "We are in the process. We might make the request next week. There are procedures that must be followed," he mentioned at a press conference held at the MACC headquarters.

Abd Halim explained that seven investigation papers have been opened so far under the operation dubbed 'Op Fella'. Furthermore, statements from 29 witnesses have been recorded concerning alleged corruption related to asset purchases and investments by Felda and FIC. These witnesses include former board members from both Felda and FIC, management personnel, and individuals from government agencies and the private sector.

He elaborated that among those summoned are former members of the Felda and FIC boards of directors, management personnel, as well as representatives from entities such as land authorities, independent valuers, and law firms. "All the witnesses are interconnected," he remarked.

In a development on September 6, the MACC detained two individuals associated with the investigation: a former Felda director-general and a former FIC chief executive officer. These individuals remain under remand to aid in the investigation. Abd Halim noted that the MACC is also tracing financial flows to assess any potential misconduct or bribery involving FIC officials.

The investigation is focused on documents related to a purchase in Sarawak, the acquisition of an overseas hotel, and the establishment of Felda's subsidiaries, he added.

In a related matter, Abd Halim mentioned that the MACC is probing allegations of misappropriation and abuse of power involving Felda Palong 7 in Negeri Sembilan. Statements have been recorded from eight individuals, including five Felda witnesses and three suppliers. Additionally, the MACC is seeking the cooperation of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) to verify the specifications of the supplied seedlings.
