Izu:Izu Velodrome Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, at the age of 38, delivered an extraordinary performance to claim the men's keirin gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azizulhasni's victory was significant as he competed against much younger cyclists, including 22-year-old Chinese competitor Li Zhiwei, in a high-speed final. Despite joining the training camp in Brisbane a week late and training with the team for only three weeks, he overcame the challenges and secured the top spot.
After failing to reach the sprint final the previous day, Azizulhasni was determined to excel in the keirin event. He had promised to give his all in pursuit of the gold, and he successfully fulfilled that promise. In the final race, he strategically increased his speed on the last lap, ensuring no one overtook him, which led to his victory.
The win was not just a personal achievement but also drew admiration from younger competitors like Japan's Kaiya Ota and Li Zhiwei. They were impressed by his ability to compete at such a high level at 38 years old. Azizulhasni's career at the Asian Games now includes three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
