Bangkok: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have instructed the two national coaching directors - Kenneth Jonassen for singles and Rexy Mainaky for doubles - to conduct an immediate post-mortem to identify the cause of the national shuttlers' failure to secure the men's team gold medal at the SEA Games in Thailand 2025 yesterday. Malaysia faced a 3-0 defeat against traditional rivals Indonesia in the final held at Gymnasium 4 of Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus. The last time Malaysia won the men's team gold was during the 2005 edition in the Philippines.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh emphasized the urgency of conducting an investigation as the team is set to compete in the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) 2026 in Qingdao, China, from February 3-8. He expressed the need for drastic measures following the disappointing result and stated that both coaching directors must analyze and perform a post-mortem to understand the reasons behind the loss to prevent a recurrence, especially with the upcoming BATC 2026 preparations.

Kenny, who also serves as the Malaysian chef de mission, commented on the situation while observing national taekwondo exponents at the Fashion Island Mall. Despite the setback, he expressed hope that the shuttlers would focus on the individual events, which are scheduled from today until Sunday.

BAM had previously set a target of four gold medals for the shuttlers at the biennial Games, which are taking place from December 9-20 in Bangkok and Chonburi.
