Kuala lumpur: Berjaya Air Sdn Bhd is targeting ownership of two new ATR 72-600 Highline aircraft by the end of this year, with an annual capital expenditure (capex) of RM70 million. Berjaya Aviation Group independent non-executive director Datuk Chester Voo said the company currently has one aircraft in operation, while the second aircraft is expected to arrive by October this year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, these aircraft will serve routes during periods such as Aidilfitri, Aidiladha and other peak seasons. For example, Berjaya Air can operate non-scheduled charter flights to Kota Bharu, Alor Setar, and other destinations in Peninsular Malaysia, providing an alternative travel solution. The company aims to conduct about four to six flights a day with one aeroplane, and this number is expected to increase to about 10 flights a day once the second aircraft comes in, as stated by Voo at a press conference after the ATR 72-600 Business Class Aircraft launch ceremony.

Despite rising oil prices amid geopolitical uncertainties, Voo expressed confidence in the company's outlook. Berjaya Air's business model focuses on niche and premium operations rather than competing directly with traditional airlines. Voo emphasized that their model is not based on frequent flights to common destinations like Penang or Kota Kinabalu but rather on offering a dedicated group of 26 passengers the opportunity to travel in comfort and on their own schedule.

The ATR Highline aircraft, configured with an exclusive 26-seat all-business-class cabin, represents a significant advancement in regional air travel. The group stated that the aircraft will support its regional expansion plans and enhance connectivity across Southeast Asia. This includes the introduction of seven routes comprising two existing and five new destinations, such as Koh Samui, Phu Quoc, Medan, Pekanbaru, and Batam.
