Biofuels Emit More CO2 Than Fossil Fuels, Report Reveals

Brasilia: Global biofuels production emits 16% more CO2 on average than the fossil fuels it replaces, according to a new Cerulogy report on behalf of T and E. With demand for biofuels expected to rise by at least 40% by 2030, T and E is urging global leaders gathering in Brazil for COP30 to reach an agreement to limit the expansion of this climate solution, which is proving to be more harmful than beneficial.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the higher emissions from biofuels are primarily due to the indirect impacts of farming and deforestation associated with crop-based biofuels. By 2030, biofuels are expected to emit 70 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent more than the fossil fuels they replace. This amount is comparable to the annual emissions produced by nearly 30 million diesel cars.
