BN Considers Revamping Traditional Seat Approach for Negeri Sembilan Polls

Rembau: Barisan Nasional (BN) is contemplating a strategic shift in its approach to contesting traditional seats in the upcoming 16th Negeri Sembilan state election. BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan announced the potential changes, citing significant alterations in voter demographics across many constituencies.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Hasan emphasized the need to reassess the traditional allocation of seats, which has historically been assigned in a fixed manner. "We want to look again and if possible, we want to modify it so that it gives an opportunity to component parties in the BN to contest in constituencies that they feel they can win. Compared to the traditional way, for example, seats 1, 2, 3, 4, these are yours," he stated. Mohamad, speaking as the Negeri Sembilan BN chairman, highlighted the importance of providing voters with choices and accommodating BN component parties through potential seat swaps.

Mohamad, who also holds the position of UMNO deputy president, noted that past election results would serve as a basis for analyzing voter support trends and demographic shifts before making any final decisions. He stressed that the BN Supreme Council at the central level would have the final say regarding seat distribution and candidate selection, which includes consideration for the component parties allied with BN.

In preparation for the election, division heads have been directed to propose at least three candidates for each seat, following established protocols. Mohamad revealed that BN aims to announce its candidates on July 15 during the launch of the BN election machinery, acknowledging the limited time available.

Reflecting on previous elections, Mohamad cautioned against internal disputes within BN, as such conflicts have historically led to the loss of several seats due to internal sabotage. He also mentioned the possibility of defending his long-held Rantau state seat, though this decision would ultimately rest with the party leadership.

The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled polling for the Negeri Sembilan state election on August 1, with nominations set for July 18 and early voting on July 28.
