BNM to Review Macro Data Ahead of MPC Meeting, Says Governor

Kuala lumpur: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will review the latest macroeconomic developments ahead of its upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in two weeks before deciding its appropriate monetary policy stance. "We will assess whether the current monetary policy stance is consistent with the outlook of inflation and growth," Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Governor Abdul Rasheed noted that the BNM's monetary policy decisions are data-dependent, taking into account a broad range of indicators, including domestic demand, external conditions, inflationary pressures, and financial market developments. He emphasized the importance of these assessments in shaping the central bank's approach to ensuring price stability while supporting sustainable economic growth.

The upcoming MPC meeting is scheduled for September 3, 2026. Malaysia's overnight policy rate currently stands at 2.75 percent, a level maintained since the central bank's last MPC decision on July 9, 2026, following a reduction from 3 percent in July 2025. The Governor highlighted that upcoming data points could influence the central bank's assessment of the economic outlook, particularly concerning inflation and growth, ahead of the MPC meeting.
