Call For Greater Focus On Co-occurring Conditions In Autism

Kuala lumpur: Co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) require greater attention, as many cases remain undiagnosed and untreated, according to a behavioural psychologist.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sitra Panirsheeluam highlighted that studies indicate more than 70 per cent of individuals with autism experience at least one co-occurring condition, underscoring the need for early detection and a more comprehensive approach to care. Panirsheeluam emphasized the importance of addressing co-occurring diagnoses, noting that many children and adults are not receiving treatment for specific conditions despite the availability of evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and other therapeutic modalities.

She further announced the organization of a forum titled 'Looking Beyond the Spectrum: Identifying Co-Occurring Conditions in Autism,' which is scheduled to take place at the MindNexis Multipurpose Hall, Bangsar, from 10 am to 12.30 pm on April 18. The forum aims to bring together specialists to address gaps in assessment and intervention.

The event will feature insights from developmental paediatrician Dr Tan Chee Sean and clinical forensic psychologist Dr Loheswary Arumugam. Their discussions will focus on structured assessments, diagnostic accuracy, and multidisciplinary intervention strategies to improve the care and treatment of individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions.
