Kuala lumpur: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet today lauded the newly concluded KL Peace Accord as a landmark achievement, characterising it as a historic milestone that will significantly advance bilateral stability and cooperation. Speaking during the signing ceremony of the agreement on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits today, he also reaffirmed Cambodia's strong commitment to fully implementing the deal and pledged to continue working closely with Thailand.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, on behalf of the Cambodian peoples, Manet expressed his deepest gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for his decisive leadership and steadfast commitment to supporting the lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand. He also extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his unwavering support and facilitation throughout the peace process. The signing ceremony was also attended by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who signed the KL Accord, witnessed by Anwar and Trump.
Manet expressed confidence that the international community and key partners will continue to provide support and contribute to the effective implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord. He highlighted that senior commanders from both Thai and Cambodian armed forces are engaged in discussions regarding an initial, phased withdrawal of heavy weaponry, emphasizing it as an early demonstration of their shared commitment to advancing the terms of the agreement.
He also expressed hope for the prompt release of 18 Cambodian soldiers on humanitarian grounds and as agreed in the Joint Declarations. Furthermore, Manet announced his nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts to promote peace not only between Cambodia and Thailand but also among other nations.
Thailand and Cambodia have long been locked in a border dispute stretching 817 kilometres, with the latest flare-up on July 24 leading to a military confrontation. On July 28, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hosted a crucial meeting in Putrajaya between Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, which successfully eased tensions along their shared border.
The ceasefire, seen as a major ASEAN achievement, has helped prevent the conflict from escalating and ensured the safety of thousands of civilians. Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair for 2025 under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', is hosting the Summit starting today until Oct 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
