Batu anam: In-person classes at Kolej Komuniti Segamat 2 in Batu Anam resumed yesterday after a three-day shift to online learning, following a series of mild earthquakes that hit the district earlier this week.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the college's deputy director (Academic) Afida Kamarudin mentioned that the precautionary move was taken after students discovered cracks in Block E, which houses several classrooms, after Sunday's tremor. A preliminary inspection by the college's assistant engineer found three minor cracks, prompting the management to contact the Public Works Department (JKR) for further assessment. Block E was temporarily closed to facilitate the inspection. Face-to-face learning resumed after initial findings confirmed the cracks were non-structural. The college is awaiting JKR's full report.
Afida revealed that the college has 330 students, nearly half of whom reside in campus dormitories. No injuries were reported. She noted that students have been briefed on safety protocols and advised to report any future tremors immediately. 'This is the first time such an incident has occurred at the college,' she added.
Student Mohamad Idris Mohamed, 22, reported feeling tremors only on the first day, while fellow student Nur Alia Natasha Mohd Puad, 18, expressed hope that there would be no recurrence, as it could disrupt learning. A weak earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Segamat at 4.24 am yesterday, marking the fourth in the district this week. Three earlier quakes were reported on August 24, 27, and 28, with magnitudes ranging between 2.5 and 4.1.
