Customs DG Calls for More Advanced Cargo Scanners at Major Ports

Senawang: There is a need to add more cargo scanners at the country's main ports, Customs director-general Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin said. She noted that an application for seven new, more advanced cargo scanners, including those equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, has been submitted to enhance the efficiency of container inspections by the Customs Department at major ports.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the application was submitted to the Finance Ministry in 2023 and is still at the procurement stage. Anis Rizana emphasized the necessity of these scanners but acknowledged the requirement to comply with the Treasury circular. She expressed hope for an expedited process. The current use of single-view scanners highlights the need for dual-view scanners, which are more advanced. Four machines have been requested for Port Klang, one for Johor, and two for Penang.

In a separate development, Anis Rizana disclosed that an investigation is underway against a Customs officer for allegedly breaching integrity regulations through a social media post. She clarified that the investigation does not imply guilt, stressing the importance of raising awareness among officers and staff to exercise caution. Education for civil servants on General Orders and Standing Instructions is a key focus to prevent such incidents.

Anis Rizana assured that any complaints regarding integrity violations will be thoroughly investigated by the Integrity Branch, with a comprehensive investigation process conducted before any action is taken.
