Kuala Lumpur: A total of 18 children rescued from a welfare home in Cheras are now under the temporary care of the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Selangor Women Development and Social Welfare Committee chairman Anfaal Saari confirmed that the state JKM is actively working to trace the next of kin of the children, comprising 12 boys and six girls.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anfaal stated that the Selangor JKM has secured a temporary custody order for two months. Following this period, the process will continue until investigations are concluded. If the children's families are successfully located, they will be returned to the appropriate and qualified parties for care. Anfaal disclosed this information following the launch of the Selangor Care Accelerator (XCare) 2025.
Previously, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry issued a statement ordering the closure of a welfare home after a video went viral showing mistreatment of children at the facility.
In a related matter, Anfaal addressed a murder case in Section 18 involving two disabled beggars believed to have clashed over territory. She announced that the Selangor government is drafting a Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) policy to address the rights and needs of the disabled community, focusing on inclusivity and ensuring no one is left behind.
Anfaal also highlighted efforts to combat the rise in HIV infection cases among university and school students. Her office plans to collaborate with the police and relevant authorities to prevent the situation from worsening. Additionally, she intends to request a report from Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan on cases related to drug abuse and other social issues to facilitate a coordinated response.
She emphasized the importance of working with the Selangor Health Department (JKNS) to promote early awareness and advocacy on the dangers of HIV, addressing the issue in an integrated manner beyond welfare or family development perspectives.
