DavSur town opens 1st local college, offers specialized courses

The local government of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur launched its first college institution on Tuesday, offering three specialized courses as initial offerings. The mayor and officials from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) inaugurated the Davao Del Sur State College (DSSC)-Sta. Cruz Extension Campus. In a statement Wednesday, Mayor Nelson Sala said classes will begin on Aug. 14 with 150 pioneering enrollees, all residents of the municipality, availing of the first level of focused tertiary education. DSSC offers courses in Associate in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness. Sala challenged the first batch of students to finish school to secure a better future. ‘There are a lot of our friends who are willing to give scholarships. An initial 50 scholarships were already given to us so study hard and achieve your ambition,’ he said. Meanwhile, CHED Commissioner Aldrin Darilag said the extension campus ‘adds value to tertiary education’, offering opportunities for members to expand their knowledge, enhance capabilities, and pursue specialized courses for local and global needs. In addition, Dr. Augie Fuentes, president of DSSC, praised the extension campus as a testament to progress and the transformative power of learning. ‘This is a realization of a vision that has been nurtured through collaboration, dedication, and shared commitment to education,’ she said.
