Malaysia: Malaysia and Thailand are set to revive the direct train service linking Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok within this year, as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. The revival is expected to proceed without delay by utilizing the existing railway line that connects Bangkok, Padang Besar, Butterworth, and Kuala Lumpur.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have been tasked with a three-month timeline to conduct initial preparations for the Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok train operations. This initiative does not necessitate new track construction but requires coordination, joint marketing, and cooperative ticketing efforts between the two nations. Loke shared these details with Bernama following a one-day working visit to Thailand, during which he met with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit. The visit also included a tour of the Bang Sue Central Terminal and a briefing on Thailand's high-speed rail services.
In addition, Loke mentioned that Thai authorities proposed extending rail services from Sungai Golok to Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas in Malaysia. He viewed this proposal as an opportunity to enhance local economies and improve livelihoods in the border region. However, Loke noted that preparations for reviving the railway link between Sungai Golok, Rantau Panjang, and Pasir Mas would require time due to the necessary track restoration work on the long-unused railway lines in those areas.
