Labuan: The arrival of Doulos Hope, the floating bookstore ship, has not only captivated the imagination of the Labuan community but also brought significant cultural and economic benefits, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Zaliha, during her visit to the vessel, highlighted that the presence of Doulos Hope has created an alternative avenue of engagement for the local community. It allows them to experience the floating book fair and step onboard to witness the unique life and mission of a ship crewed by more than 100 volunteers from over 30 countries.
Dr Zaliha noted that the ship has attracted a continuous stream of visitors ranging from children and students to senior citizens and tour groups. She observed the non-stop flow of people boarding the ship, all eager to explore what Doulos Hope offers, and expressed her delight over the curiosity and unity the vessel has brought to Labuan.
The Minister also pointed out the economic benefits generated by the visit, as the ship's international crew and volunteers frequently visit local eateries, cafes, and convenience stores, contributing to the income of small businesses.
Doulos Hope director Nidhin Sebastian reported an overwhelming response from the public, with nearly 25,000 visitors since the ship's arrival in Labuan. He expressed his gratitude for the warmth and hospitality shown by the people of Labuan.
The ship, which will remain docked in Labuan until July 28, continues its mission to bring knowledge, help, and hope through books and intercultural engagement. The public can access the ship and its book fair for free, offering a selection of over 2,000 titles at affordable prices.
The visit by Doulos Hope is part of its Southeast Asian tour, with Labuan marking one of its most successful stops so far in terms of public turnout and local engagement.
