E-Commerce Bill Aims to Enhance Industry Standards, Says Lazada

Kuala Lumpur:The new E-Commerce Bill, set to be presented in the next parliamentary session, may provide a chance to enforce consistent industry standards, as stated by Lazada Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Khairil Ahmad, Lazada's vice president of government affairs and public policy, highlighted that seller verification, measures against counterfeit products, transparent returns and refunds, and responsible platform governance are already integral to Lazada's operations. He emphasized that consistent standards protect consumers and enable local sellers to compete based on quality and value, which is crucial as Malaysians face cost-of-living challenges.

During his Budget 2027 speech, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mentioned that introducing the E-Commerce Bill is part of efforts to enhance accountability among online platforms and sellers. He announced a RM10 million allocation for Jom Beli Produk Malaysia, aiming to promote rural products and high-value services digitally and internationally.

Khairil commented on the Jom Malaysia initiative, stating it supports the government's goal of expanding the reach of Malaysian products and services. He noted that Lazada collaborates with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to assist local brands in reaching more consumers, providing marketing tools, and enhancing logistics and customer support.

Additionally, Khairil acknowledged the government's RM142 million allocation to bolster the National Information Dissemination Centre, viewing it as a recognition of digital entrepreneurship's significance. He expressed Lazada's commitment to supporting a more trusted and competitive digital economy through reliable shopping experiences and effective seller training, aiming to expand the reach of Malaysian brands. This progress is expected to enhance consumer confidence and create growth opportunities for local businesses.
