E-Commerce Bill to Enhance Industry Standards, Says Lazada

Kuala Lumpur:The new E-Commerce Bill, set to be tabled in the next parliamentary session, is expected to strengthen consistent standards across the e-commerce industry, according to Lazada Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Khairil Ahmad, Lazada's vice president of government affairs and public policy, stated that the platform already incorporates seller verification, measures against counterfeit products, clear returns and refunds, and responsible platform governance as part of its operations.

Khairil emphasized that consistently applied standards protect shoppers and enable responsible local sellers to compete on quality, service, and value. He noted that as Malaysians face cost-of-living pressures, affordable shopping must also be dependable.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his Budget 2027 speech on Friday, highlighted that the E-Commerce Bill aims to enhance accountability among online platforms and sellers. He also announced a RM10 million allocation for Jom Beli Produk Malaysia (Jom Malaysia), which aims to promote rural products and high-value services on digital platforms and in overseas markets.

Khairil commented on the Jom Malaysia allocation, stating that it supports the government's efforts to expand Malaysian products and services' market reach. He mentioned that Lazada is collaborating with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living under this initiative to help homegrown brands increase their visibility and customer base.

He also noted that the government's RM142 million allocation for the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) underscores the significance of digital entrepreneurship. Khairil concluded that Budget 2027 lays a strong foundation for building a more trusted and competitive digital economy, with Lazada committed to supporting this through dependable shopping, seller training, and technology that helps Malaysian brands grow and maintain customer loyalty.
