Kuala lumpur: An elderly couple in Kampung Batu 17 are struggling as repeated flooding over the past two decades has left large parts of their home deteriorating. Hanim Azwar Mohd, 69, said the more than 40-year-old house has become increasingly unsafe, with the kitchen badly affected, roofs leaking, and walls cracking from frequent overflows of a nearby stream.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, previous repairs with help from neighbours have failed to hold up as the damage worsens over time. The mother of nine said her husband, Mohd Sapiee Kamarudin, has suffered from chronic lung disease for 20 years and relies on continuous oxygen support, adding to the family’s difficulties.
Hanim stated that the family has no fixed income, with monthly Baitulmal assistance largely spent on the oxygen equipment, while their children are also supporting their own families. She expressed hope for external assistance, saying, “I hope there are parties willing to help us,” when met at her house.
Political Secretary to the Finance Minister Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim mentioned that the matter will be referred to the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department (ICU JPM) for further action, noting that the house may need to be demolished and rebuilt. Earlier, Muhammad Kamil visited the family under the MADANI Ziarah Kasih programme for the Lubuk Merbau state constituency and presented cash assistance to the couple.
