Accra:Employers are encouraged to utilize Job Coach services to assist workers with disabilities in adapting to their roles and work environments, thereby enhancing inclusive employment opportunities. Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Lim Hui Ying emphasized the importance of these services in helping employers understand the needs of workers with disabilities and adopt suitable communication methods to ensure effective job performance.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lim highlighted that with appropriate guidance, workplace adjustments, and mutual understanding, more individuals with disabilities could excel at work and contribute productively. She stressed the necessity for employers to provide training opportunities, identify talents, and create a fair and safe working environment. These comments were made during the 'Langkah Bersama Berapit 2.0 Careers and Opportunities for Youths with Disabilities' program.
Lim addressed the concerns of parents regarding the future of their children with disabilities post-schooling, emphasizing the need for serious attention to access skills training and employer willingness to hire and guide them. She stated that differences in communication, learning, or social interaction, particularly among neurodivergent youths such as those with autism and ADHD, should not hinder employment opportunities. Instead, a supportive work environment tailored to individual needs should be fostered to help these youths develop their capabilities and potential.
The Deputy Minister underscored that empowering persons with disabilities requires comprehensive cooperation among ministries, government agencies, training institutions, and the private sector to ensure access to education, skills training, and employment opportunities. She also encouraged more companies to support these efforts through corporate social responsibility programs and initiatives to recruit workers with disabilities.
Furthermore, Lim mentioned that the RM1.5 billion allocation for persons with disabilities under Budget 2027 would benefit over 300,000 recipients. Measures include an increase in the monthly Bedridden PwD Care and Chronically Ill Patients Allowance from RM500 to RM600, raising the threshold for the Disabled Workers' Allowance from RM1,700 to RM2,000, and providing free public transport passes to the PwD community. Additionally, 3,000 new PwD caregivers will receive specialized skills training, and 15 Community-Based Rehabilitation premises will be upgraded into specialized therapy centers.
