Kemaman: The Terengganu Social Welfare Department has extended counselling services to the family of a disabled man who was recently assaulted by a group of men at Pasar Tani Padang Astaka Chukai, near Kemaman. The incident has drawn attention and support from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stated that the ministry is awaiting further updates from the police to determine potential actions under their jurisdiction. She noted that the Terengganu team had approached the victim's family, who initially declined counselling services but eventually accepted. The victim is also a recipient of welfare aid provided by the ministry.
During a press event following the 'Sanjungan Ilmu' Programme organized by the Social Institute of Malaysia, Nancy emphasized that the incident should not have happened and urged the public to avoid taking justice into their own hands. She highlighted the importance of allowing authorities to handle such situations appropriately.
In addition to addressing the assault case, Nancy commented on the salary gap issue between male and female graduates in Malaysia. She plans to discuss the matter at the upcoming Cabinet meeting, highlighting the need for collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources to address this concern.
Nancy also mentioned that the Social Work Profession Bill is set to be resubmitted to the Attorney-General soon, with plans to table it in Parliament by July. The bill requires further provisions and coordination among various ministries to ensure its approval.
Furthermore, Nancy expressed concern over begging syndicates exploiting children in areas like Bukit Bintang and Klang, where they reportedly collect substantial daily earnings. She remarked that such activities tarnish Malaysia's image as the current chair of ASEAN.
