First Phase Of Penang Air Cargo Warehouse Expected To Be Completed In 2029

Penang: Penang is currently carrying out earthworks and soil treatment for the Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA) project, with the first phase of the free commercial zone-class air cargo warehouse expected to be completed and operational in 2029. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the approval of the planning permission for the master plan of the project, paving the way for the development to proceed as scheduled.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, PILA is designed to handle cargo capacity of up to 500,000 tonnes per year by 2050, providing over two million square feet of warehouse space. The first phase of the air cargo warehouse is anticipated to support an additional capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes per year. This strategic joint venture between the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) aims to develop a new cargo terminal, enhancing the logistics ecosystem in the Northern Region and bolstering the growth of Penang's industrial sector.

The collaboration is crucial for addressing the logistics needs of the semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E and E) industries in the future, aligning with the aspirations of Penang Vision 2030, the State Structure Plan 2030, and the expansion of Penang International Airport. Furthermore, the launch ceremony of PILA, which has garnered rental commitments from international and local logistics companies, is actively being planned and is expected to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
