Kuala lumpur: President of the United Nations Habitat Assembly Nga Kor Ming called on all United Nations (UN) member states for global cooperation to address the escalating urban displacement crisis. Nga, who is also the Housing and Local Government Minister, emphasized the urgent need for collaborative action in his video address for World Habitat Day 2025.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UN data reveals a record 122 million people have been forcibly displaced due to conflict and political instability. Nga highlighted the increasing urban nature of this displacement, with over 60 percent of internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrants seeking refuge in cities, thereby straining local systems.
Nga urged all Member States to enhance multi-level cooperation to equip city managers and local leaders with the necessary tools and resources to effectively respond to urban displacement. He also encouraged continued support for UN-Habitat's technical assistance in helping cities and communities rebuild, integrate, and become more resilient.
The theme of this year's World Habitat Day, 'Urban Solutions to Crisis,' was deemed timely and appropriate by Nga. He noted the presence of over 120 active conflicts worldwide and stressed the need to intensify efforts for equitable development.
At the resumed session of the UN Habitat Assembly in June, Nga emphasized his Presidency's key priorities, particularly supporting the implementation of the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2026-2029. He stressed the importance of evolving from merely providing shelter to ensuring access to adequate housing, which is crucial for sustainable cities and communities.
Nga referenced the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum, where over 9,000 delegates from 66 countries, including more than 300 mayors, reiterated their commitment to enhancing local capacities and building future-fit cities.
Regarding national efforts, Nga reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to strengthening housing and sustainability initiatives. He stated that Malaysia is on track to meet its target of building 500,000 affordable housing units under the Urban Renewal Act, while also enhancing land tenure security. These efforts align with Malaysia's Zero Waste initiative and broader climate commitments to ensure long-term urban sustainability.
