Government Enhances National Preparedness Against Geopolitical Threats

Kuala Lumpur:The Malaysian government is set to bolster the country's readiness against geopolitical uncertainties and global security threats, with a focus on protecting food, water, and energy supplies from potential disruptions, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the importance of addressing security threats that go beyond conventional warfare, such as cyberattacks and disinformation. A special meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) was convened to evaluate the nation's preparedness and the effectiveness of current mechanisms in responding to crises and hybrid threats.

The government aims to strengthen national security and crisis management mechanisms, particularly in inter-agency coordination and information sharing, to ensure a coordinated response and prevent delays in decision-making. Anwar highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive approach involving cooperation across ministries, security agencies, the private sector, and the public.

Key areas of focus include improved coordination and information sharing among ministries, regular training exercises, and the protection of critical infrastructure in sectors such as energy, telecommunications, and finance. Public preparedness will be enhanced through education programmes and crisis management training.

To ensure swift implementation, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar will chair a meeting with ministry secretaries-general and directors-general. The meeting will address national food supply adequacy and the continuity of water and energy services. Anwar also noted that the security situation in regions like Yemen and the Red Sea could impact Malaysian seafarers and trade routes, while complex threats in Europe demand comprehensive national security strategies.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of safeguarding Malaysia's digital and data centre sectors, which are considered strong on an international scale. Malaysia's firm positions on international issues such as Palestine and Gaza could also make it a potential target for security threats.

In response to intelligence reports on emerging threats, Anwar is prepared to request a closed-door briefing for Members of Parliament by the National Security Council director-general to share the latest developments. He called on all MPs to prioritize attending this briefing to understand the security landscape better.
