Kuala Lumpur:Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is set to submit a representation to drop a sedition charge related to statements he allegedly made during the 2024 Nenggiri state by-election campaign.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the sedition charge stems from Muhyiddin's alleged claim that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the time did not invite him to be sworn in as Prime Minister after the 15th General Election, despite his purported support from 115 out of 222 MPs.
His lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, mentioned that the defense received a letter from the palace after Muhyiddin was granted an audience by Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. Although details were not disclosed, the defense informed the court of "positive developments" and expressed intentions to submit a fresh representation to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC).
The defense requested the trial be delayed to allow time for further developments, ensuring goodwill is not jeopardized. The Deputy Public Prosecutor, Azlina Rasdi, did not object to this application, leading the court to vacate previously scheduled trial dates and set December 3 for updates on the case.
Muhyiddin, who also serves as the president of Bersatu, was charged on August 27, 2024, for allegedly making seditious remarks during the by-election campaign in Gua Musang, Kelantan. The charge, under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, could result in a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both, if convicted. Initially mentioned in the Gua Musang Sessions Court, the case was transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court for trial.
