Kuala lumpur: The government has agreed to increase the biodiesel blend rate from B10 to B15, starting with B12, as a measure to sustain the country's diesel supply following the crisis in West Asia. Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir highlighted that the transition to renewable energy is essential to reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels and external markets. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Akmal Nasrullah stated that the existing infrastructure allows the upgrade to B12 without incurring additional costs. The government aims to stabilize supply and prices and build long-term resilience, with recovery from the current crisis expected to take up to 18 months. The minister noted that Malaysia's biodiesel production in 2025 was 975,207 metric tonnes, with a production capacity of 2.36 million metric tonnes. This indicates that the industrial base, supply chain, and blending capacity are well-established and only need structured enhancement for greater national benefits. During a visit to S yarikat PS Pipeline Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Petronas Dagangan Bhd and Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd at the Klang Valley Distribution Terminal, the readiness of infrastructure and blending facilities was assessed, showcasing the government's commitment to this transition. Akmal Nasrullah added that the National Economic Action Council has recognized biodiesel as a practical alternative biofuel that can be implemented promptly. The government is focusing on measures that can be immediately mobilized with direct impacts based on existing domestic capabilities, such as biodiesel, to reduce reliance on uncertain fossil fuel supplies. The minister further elaborated on prolonging the country's diesel supply through mitigation plans and the B20 and B30 depot upgrade under the 13th Malaysia Plan, aiming for a B30 mandate for the commercial and public sectors. Engagement with the Oil Industry Technical Committee will ensure orderly implementation of these measures. Finally, Akmal Nasrullah emphasized th at the government will continue monitoring global developments, ensuring sufficient energy supply, and accelerating reforms towards a more resilient energy system as a strategic national priority.
