Government Sets 10% Water Quality Improvement Goal for Polluted Rivers

Hanoi:Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced that the government aims to enhance the Water Quality Index (WQI) of 33 rivers identified as polluted by at least 10 percent within a year. State governments achieving this target will receive appropriate recognition.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah set this goal during the second 2026 meeting of the National Special Committee on Addressing River Water Quality Deterioration, which he chaired. Department of Environment (DOE) reports indicated an increase in the number of polluted rivers from 25 in 2023 to 33 in 2025.

In Selangor, the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) reported 144 cases of water source pollution over the three years leading up to September 14, 2026. Fadillah acknowledged LUAS's efforts but stressed the need for more effective and coordinated actions to address the rising pollution levels.

He highlighted the potential disruptions to water treatment plant operations and economic activities caused by polluted rivers, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing water resource protection across all administrative levels.

A pilot study on integrated management of non-point source pollution will be conducted in a selected local authority area to gather field data and formulate control measures. Additionally, a Technical Committee on Effluent Discharge Standards, chaired by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, will collaborate with the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) to implement these standards in urban and rural areas.

The meeting also introduced guidelines for installing floating solar panels on water reservoirs and lakes, ensuring sustainable development while protecting water resources. These initiatives demonstrate the government's commitment to tackling pollution, safeguarding national water security, and fostering cooperation among federal and state governments, local authorities, and stakeholders.
