Govt to Study Proposed Guidelines to Address 3R Issues Among MPs

Kuala lumpur: The government will study a proposal to formulate guidelines, including mechanisms, to prevent Members of Parliament (MPs) from touching on sensitive issues of race, religion, and the monarchy (3R) during debates in the Dewan Rakyat. Deputy National Unity Minister R. Yuneswaran announced that the proposal will be presented to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul in the near future.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Yuneswaran emphasized that although MPs have immunity in the Dewan Rakyat, they must act responsibly to ensure that their statements do not provoke anger or tension among the public. He pointed out that while action may not be taken within the Dewan Rakyat, it does not mean MPs can freely make statements on sensitive topics related to race, religion, and the royal institution. Yuneswaran made these remarks during the launch of the Malaysian Racism Report 2025 by Pusat Komas.

He further stated that all parties, including politicians, should focus on the national development agenda and the well-being of the people. Yuneswaran also expressed support for a proposal by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia to introduce a National Harmony Act. He noted that the proposal is still in the early stages of discussion and requires support from the Prime Minister's Office as a proactive step to strengthen national unity.

Yuneswaran revealed that discussions within the ministry are underway to establish a Harmony Commission and to consider the introduction of a Harmony Act. However, he acknowledged that these efforts are still in the preliminary stages of discussion.
