Kuala lumpur: The government will study a proposal to formulate guidelines, including mechanisms, to prevent Members of Parliament (MPs) from touching on sensitive issues of race, religion, and the monarchy (3R) during debates in the Dewan Rakyat. Deputy National Unity Minister R. Yuneswaran announced that the proposal will be presented to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul in the near future.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Yuneswaran emphasized the importance of responsible communication by MPs, despite their immunity in the Dewan Rakyat. He stated that while MPs are protected, they must ensure their statements do not provoke anger or tension among the public. He further noted that although legal action might not be taken within the Dewan Rakyat, it does not justify making statements that could inflame sensitivities related to race, religion, and the royal institution.
Yuneswaran stressed the need for all parties, including politicians, to focus on the national development agenda and the well-being of the people. He also expressed support for a proposal by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia to introduce a National Harmony Act, indicating that discussions on this matter are in the early stages and require backing from the Prime Minister's Office to strengthen national unity.
He revealed that the ministry is engaged in discussions to establish a Harmony Commission and a Harmony Act, although these initiatives are still in their infancy.
