Home Ministry Advances AI-Based Border Control System

Kuala Lumpur:The Home Ministry is working on an artificial intelligence (AI)-based National Border Control System (SKSN) to enhance surveillance and security enforcement along Malaysia's borders.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah explained that the SKSN would function as a smart surveillance platform. It is designed to facilitate real-time information sharing among enforcement agencies, identify suspicious movement patterns, and enable quicker responses in high-risk areas.

The SKSN's development follows a feasibility study by the Malaysian Institute of Public Security, focusing on integrating intelligence and surveillance systems through a unified command center. Shamsul Anuar highlighted this integration during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat, in response to a query from Rushdan Rusmi (PN-Padang Besar) regarding the government's plan for a smart border control system, notably in Perlis.

The implementation of advanced surveillance technologies in Perlis and along the Malaysia-Thailand border includes a CCTV control room and a Video Surveillance System (VSS) at the Padang Besar ICQS Complex. This system consists of 42 cameras and 264 lights covering a 53.3-kilometer area. Additionally, the ministry has acquired eight VTOL drones worth RM26 million and is finalizing the procurement of five Mobile Intelligence FTI units valued at RM7 million.

Furthermore, 40 drones of various types have been purchased for approximately RM5.2 million. Construction of a jetty and observation tower equipped with CCTV cameras and drones at Batu Putih Post in Perlis, costing RM20 million, is also underway. Existing surveillance systems operated by the police are being upgraded under the Third Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan.

As of September 2026, authorities have identified 25 illegal crossing routes in Perlis. The General Operations Force (GOF) reported seizures valued at RM6.57 million along the state's border in 2025 and RM6.27 million from January to August this year.
