Home Ministry Initiates Operation to Tackle Foreigners’ Illegal Business Activities

Kuala lumpur: The Home Ministry (KDN), through its enforcement agencies, is launching a special operation to address illegal business activities conducted by foreigners misusing social visit passes in the country. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced this measure following instructions from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who responded to public complaints about the issue.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Home Ministry is enlisting agencies such as the Immigration Department and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to intensify efforts to curb these activities. Saifuddin noted that the Prime Minister had received numerous complaints, prompting the ministry to enhance its enforcement actions, particularly under the Immigration Act.

The Prime Minister, during a speech at the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly, urged relevant ministries and enforcement agencies to swiftly implement firm actions against illegal business activities involving foreigners. He emphasized a coordinated approach involving agencies such as the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), and others.

According to Saifuddin, the Home Ministry has the expertise and intelligence capabilities to monitor foreigners involved in illegal business operations. The ministry has pinpointed hotspots where foreigners frequently violate the Immigration Act, either by entering the country without valid documents, overstaying, or misusing their passes.

Local traders have lodged many complaints, citing unfair competition from foreigners who operate businesses without adhering to local regulations and tax obligations. Saifuddin highlighted that these individuals use social visit passes to enter the country and then engage in business activities, often undercutting local businesses by offering services at lower prices.

The ministry, particularly in Sabah, has ample experience in tackling the misuse of social passes. Saifuddin mentioned operations led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) targeting resorts believed to be run by foreigners on passes not permitting business activities. These operations have been conducted multiple times over the past year, showcasing the ministry's commitment to addressing this issue.
