Klang valley: The Immigration Department (JIM) has intensified its enforcement efforts at Ramadan bazaars across the nation to tackle the involvement of foreign nationals in illegal trading activities or working without valid permits.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban revealed that a total of 61 foreign nationals were inspected at several bazaars in the Klang Valley. Out of these, 23 individuals were detained for suspected violations of immigration laws.
Zakaria highlighted that JIM plans to increase inspections at Ramadan bazaars, as these locations often attract foreign nationals looking to conduct business. He noted that while some stalls are operated by locals, they illegally employ foreign workers. These remarks were made during a press conference following the Semarak Ramadan programme.
In addition to bazaars, inspections and enforcement operations are also being conducted in areas frequently visited by foreign nationals. Zakaria mentioned the presence of small communities where foreign nationals trade among themselves and with locals, and assured that these areas will also come under scrutiny.
Addressing the issue of foreign nationals driving without licences, Zakaria stated that the department plans to collaborate closely with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to tackle this problem. Reports from the media and public have indicated that foreign nationals are driving lorries transporting materials like stones and sand without valid licences, prompting concern and the need for appropriate action.
During the event, Zakaria, along with JIM's senior management, distributed bubur lambuk to members of the public seeking immigration services at the department's Passport Division, as well as to Immigration officers on duty.
