Penang: Small and medium enterprise (SME) entrepreneurs within the Indian community in Penang are urged to leverage the Indian Community Entrepreneur Development Scheme (SPUMI) to start or expand their businesses. State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo emphasized the importance of this initiative, which is implemented through Tekun Nasional, an agency under the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (KUSKOP). The scheme provides a crucial avenue for capital assistance to small entrepreneurs who often face financial constraints.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo highlighted that many within the community operate small-scale businesses, including simple tea stalls, and are unaware of where to obtain capital assistance. As the representative of the Indian community in the state government, he sees it as his responsibility to ensure this information reaches them, reinforcing the message that a supportive government is ready to assist in enhancing their business performance. This was conveyed to reporters after a briefing on the financing scheme.
The briefing session is conducted in phases to raise awareness among the Indian business community on application procedures for loans and available government grants. The SPUMI scheme is divided into two main categories: the first covering loans between RM1,000 and RM50,000, and the second between RM50,000 and RM100,000. This initiative, spearheaded by Human Resource Minister Steven Sim, aims to disseminate information on government assistance comprehensively across all districts, thereby increasing awareness among Indian entrepreneurs of such financing opportunities.
Following the session on the island, plans are in place to hold a similar session in Seberang Perai within the next one or two months. This effort ensures all entrepreneurs have access to the necessary financing information, further supporting their business endeavors.
