Manjung: UMNO has expressed support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's decision to delay the 16th General Election (GE16), emphasizing the need to prioritize addressing the rising cost of living over political maneuvers.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki stressed that during a time of global uncertainties, all political entities should put aside their quests for power and concentrate on the welfare of the citizens. He highlighted that in the face of a national crisis, the focus should be on assisting people in managing the escalating cost of living.
Dr Asyraf Wajdi shared these views with reporters after officiating the 2026 Concurrent UMNO Branch Meetings and attending the Lumut UMNO Division Aidilfitri Open House at Dewan Merdeka, Manjung Municipal Council. UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, also the Lumut UMNO Division Chief, was present at the event.
Prime Minister Anwar indicated yesterday that the Dewan Rakyat would not be dissolved soon for GE16, as the government aims to concentrate on economic recovery and enhancing public well-being. Dr Asyraf Wajdi pointed out that the rising global oil prices, fueled by geopolitical factors and international conflicts, pose a significant challenge that impacts the people directly and is beyond national control.
He acknowledged the Prime Minister's approach as reflective of a high sense of responsibility and concern for the current challenges faced by the population. He further emphasized that within the Barisan Nasional (BN) context, their clear position is to focus efforts on aiding the people during this crisis, ensuring that their welfare and well-being remain the top priority.
