Indonesia Urges Fairer ASEAN-EU Partnership Amid Global Challenges

Kuala lumpur: Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for a stronger and fairer ASEAN-European Union partnership, urging both sides to deepen cooperation in trade, sustainable development, and peace-building, while warning that the erosion of international law threatens global stability.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sugiono made these remarks at the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with the EU in Kuala Lumpur, which was held on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings. He highlighted that both regions have made significant strides in recent years but stressed the need for upholding mutual respect and equality within the partnership.

Sugiono emphasized the importance of fostering an equal, fair, and inclusive partnership. He urged for constructive dialogue, particularly through ongoing mechanisms like the Joint Working Group on Palm Oil and discussions on the Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement.

He also welcomed the free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the EU and several ASEAN member states, including Indonesia, underscoring the necessity for non-discriminatory economic policies to fully realize the potential of ASEAN-EU economic relations. Sugiono noted that cooperation in other areas, such as sustainable development and energy transition, remains strong.

On the topic of global security, Sugiono called for a renewed commitment to upholding international law, warning that continued violations and lack of accountability are weakening global institutions and eroding trust. He specifically referenced the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, acknowledging recent support from EU members but deeming it insufficient against the backdrop of ongoing injustice.

Sugiono concluded by warning that the abandonment of international law and inconsistent policies could have global repercussions.
