Ipoh City Council (MBI) is set to be the first local authority in the state and the Northern Zone to be chosen to implement a pilot road resurfacing project using the Cup Lump Modified Asphalt (CMA) mixture technology.
Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said that MBI and Kuala Lumpur City Hall have been chosen to carry out the pioneer project in Malaysia.
He said the MBI received an allocation of RM5 million, involving road repair and resurfacing works along a 9.5-kilometre stretch involving parts of the Tasek and IGB industrial areas, part of Jalan Bendahara and part of the main road in Station 18.
“The road resurfacing works will begin in mid-October and are expected to be completed in four to six weeks,” he said in a statement today.
He said the CMA is a new road resurfacing method using bitumen and naturally coagulated rubber as an asphalt mixture that can reduce cracks and grooves and also save on long-term maintenance costs.
The use of CMA is also appropriate as it is more durable, can bear heavier loads and is very suitable for industrial areas and main roads.
“The CMA method is seen to be able to withstand extreme weather. It is also more resistant to temperature fluctuations and rainy and hot weather conditions,” he said.
The technology, he said, would be able to reduce greenhouse carbon emissions by using a mixture of coagulated rubber to reduce the use of bitumen in the production of road pavement materials.
