Johor bahru: Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK), through Johor Special Water (JSW), is able to supply up to 12 million litres per day (MLD) of reclaimed water to two data centres in Johor, reducing reliance on the state's treated water supply.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced that the supply is channelled to Bridge Data Centres (BDC) and Computility Technology Malaysia via a 6.5-kilometre underground pipeline from IWK's sewage treatment plant in Taman Pelangi Indah, Johor Bahru.
Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the treated wastewater is pumped to the data centres as an alternative source without affecting drinking water supplies. This initiative is supported by dedicated infrastructure designed to meet the needs of water-intensive industries.
'IWK produces 7,371 MLD of treated effluent nationwide, including 1,067 MLD in Johor, which has significant potential for reuse to optimise the country's water resources,' he said at a ceremony recognising Johor data centres for using recycled water.
He further mentioned that the use of reclaimed water reflects responsible industrial practices, supports environmental protection, and applies eco-friendly technology that can reduce carbon emissions.
In addition to BDC and Computility Technology Malaysia, Dayone Data Centre Malaysia II Sdn Bhd also receives recycled water from JSW.
Fadillah highlighted the cooperation between PETRA, the Johor state government, IWK, and JSW as an important step to ensure the growth of data centres does not impact drinking water supplies. This initiative aligns with the 13th Malaysia Plan and the 2040 Water Transformation Roadmap.
He expressed hope that other states will follow Johor's example by developing data centres that prioritise reclaimed water and alternative energy for environmental sustainability and resource conservation.
At the event, Fadillah and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi witnessed the signing of agreements between JSW, IWK, and the data centre operators.
