KDEBWM To Maintain Leading Role In Waste Management Amid Legislative Changes

Shah alam: The Selangor government has confirmed that KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) will continue to be a prominent player in the solid waste management ecosystem despite potential legislative changes with the adoption of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim explained that the implementation of Act 672 is anticipated to reorganize the solid waste management framework under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp). Nevertheless, KDEBWM is expected to maintain its leading role through equal and competitive opportunities within the sector.

Ng highlighted that if Act 672 is enacted, KDEBWM's current function as a Project Management Company under the mandate of local authorities might change. However, given its status as a state-owned subsidiary with extensive experience in operations management, logistics, and green technology innovation, KDEBWM has the potential to secure new contracts through the Request for Proposal process or open tenders organized by SWCorp, in accordance with federal government procurement procedures.

The assurance came in response to a query from Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN-Sijangkang) during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, who sought clarity on KDEBWM's future role under Act 672 compliance. Ng further stated that KDEBWM's successful track record in improving solid waste collection and public cleansing services across local authorities positions it to remain competitive and recognized as a key strategic partner in the nation's waste management landscape.

Ng concluded by asserting that KDEBWM, as a wholly state-owned enterprise, will continue to be a significant consideration in decision-making processes at all levels.
