Kuala Lumpur: The Kedah government has been urged to take immediate and decisive action to address the ongoing delays at the Bukit Selambau Water Treatment Plant (LRA) construction site, near Sungai Petani, to ensure the timely completion of this critical infrastructure project. Bau Wong Bau Ek (PH-Sidam) emphasized the need for the state government to ensure the appointed contractor fulfils their obligations and completes the Bukit Selambau LRA project within the stipulated timeframe.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bau Wong Bau Ek noted that the contractor has been granted a third extension of time (EOT), which is set to expire on November 16, 2025. He mentioned his recent visit to the construction site with Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, underscoring the importance of collaboration to resolve the issue without assigning blame.
Bau Wong suggested that the government provide advisory services and regularly monitor the contractor's progress, enabling them to address any weaknesses at the site. He expressed concern over the timely completion of the Bukit Selambau LRA project, given that a critical component-the pump-has yet to be purchased. The procurement process for the pump could take up to six months, casting doubt on whether the project will meet its current deadline.
In light of these challenges, he urged the state government to prepare an alternative plan to ensure the project's completion, as it is crucial for the people of Kedah. Bau Wong also called for the introduction of financial education campaigns to raise awareness among the public about the risks of the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) system. He highlighted the potential financial hardship BNPL could impose on consumers, emphasizing the broader economic risks.
Bau Wong concluded by emphasizing collective responsibility in addressing these issues to prevent the community from falling into financial traps.
