Kedah State Assembly: Opposition Laments Halted Water Plant Upgrade

Kedah: The Kedah State Assembly opposition has expressed disappointment over the stalled Bukit Selambau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) upgrading project, allegedly after the contractor failed to complete the works despite being granted four extensions of time (EOT). Opposition leader Bau Wong Bau Ek said the situation has directly affected about 15,000 consumers in Sungai Petani, Sungai Lalang, Merbok and Tanjung Dawai.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bau Wong urged the state government to appoint a more competent contractor to complete the project promptly and ensure a stable water supply in the affected areas. He emphasized the need for the government to expedite ongoing WTP upgrading projects to enhance the state's water reserve capacity in preparation for future dry seasons. He delivered these remarks while debating the motion of thanks for the Kedah Sultan's royal address at the state assembly sitting.

Bau Wong highlighted the importance of strategic measures to stabilize the clean water supply, particularly amid rapid housing development, which necessitates comprehensive water resource planning to prevent low pressure or supply disruptions. He noted that coordination between developers and Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) is essential as Kedah is currently upgrading several major WTPs to meet domestic demand in new residential areas.

Furthermore, he pointed out that water supply and road infrastructure are crucial in developing new housing areas, especially in a rapidly developing state like Kedah. An imbalance between population growth and existing infrastructure capacity can affect the quality of life and property values, he added.

Regarding the hot weather affecting padi crops, Bau Wong suggested implementing water rationing schedules to ensure fair distribution and prevent wastage in downstream areas. He also called on the Department of Environment to tighten enforcement under Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, including imposing penalties and legal action against those involved in open burning.
