Kedah to Conduct Regularisation of Recycling Premises

Kedah: The Kedah government will initiate a regularisation exercise to clamp down on the growing number of illegal recycling premises. State Industry and Investment, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah announced that this initiative aims to ensure all recycling premises have approval from the Department of Environment (DOE) to operate, focusing on environmental sustainability.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Haim stated that a policy paper has been prepared for the regularisation of all unregistered factories, including e-waste recycling centres. He emphasized the importance of proper control to maintain the state's image and protect public welfare. This statement was made during the officiation of the Green Resources Recovery Sdn Bhd (GRRSB) Recycling Hub.

Dr Haim further mentioned that the state government would continue to support and collaborate with the DOE to curb illegal recycling activities. He noted that some operators intentionally flout the law, risking fines instead of applying for the necessary licences.

Kedah DOE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab previously highlighted that illegal e-waste recycling operations are an increasingly pressing concern. She confirmed that several premises involved in illegal processing and disposal of e-waste in the state have been identified, and actions have been taken.
