Putrajaya: The spirit of independence must continue to be nurtured in the hearts and minds of every Malaysian, with all communities united to build the nation, defend their rights, and uphold justice, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized that independence was not merely about systems or the nation itself, but, more importantly, about ensuring every Malaysian possessed a truly independent spirit.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the greatest challenge as instilling the spirit of independence in Malaysians' hearts and minds, urging unity across generations rather than divisions by race, district, or region. He delivered this message during his National Day address at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), attended by notable figures including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of translating the spirit of independence into efforts to build a Malaysia MADANI, drawing inspiration from past freedom fighters such as Hang Tuah, Tok Janggut, and others who faced adversity with courage and called for unity and trust in the promises of the Proclamation of Independence.
Anwar expressed gratitude for Malaysia's ability to remain peaceful despite challenges, emphasizing the nation's shared humanity across differences. He noted that Malaysia had demonstrated to the world the strength of unity, particularly after its independence in 1957, when many doubted its ability to endure and harness the strength of all communities.
Reflecting on Malaysia's achievements, Anwar mentioned the country's economic growth, with the GDP increasing by six percent in the second quarter of 2026. He highlighted milestones such as record-high approved investments and total trade, improved competitiveness, and the ringgit's status as Asia's best-performing currency in 2025.
The Prime Minister attributed these achievements to efforts built up since independence and the MADANI Government's commitment to strengthening the country's fundamentals. He urged Malaysians to remain united in developing the nation, regardless of their backgrounds, emphasizing the shared responsibility to secure a great future for Malaysia.
Anwar concluded by calling on Malaysians to rise, strengthen consensus, and unite efforts for the country's continued progress and glory as the nation celebrates its Independence Day.
