Kuala Lumpur: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain replacement project is currently in a multi-phase testing stage with no confirmed completion date, as stated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Loke explained that the contractor is performing dynamic testing, which will be followed by full system testing and system integration before the handover for final testing. Although initially projected to be completed by January 31, the contractor has not provided a specific date for when the Aerotrain will become operational.
Loke made these remarks during a press conference focused on Malaysia's passenger and cargo traffic performance for 2024, including projections for 2025. The Aerotrain, crucial for KLIA's internal transportation since its inception in 1998, was suspended in March 2023 due to a breakdown.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) announced last year the decision to replace the ageing Aerotrain system, and the chosen contractor is presently engaged in construction and testing phases. This project demands significant expenditure and time to ensure all testing phases are completed thoroughly.
The new Aerotrain system is anticipated to improve passenger experience at KLIA, reduce operational disruptions, and support the expected growth in air passenger traffic in the future.
