Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) will ensure that the country's food stockpile is adequate to face the monsoon season which is expected to hit several states including Kelantan and Terengganu. KPKM secretary-general, Datuk Seri Isham Ishak, stated that other states not affected by floods can assist in balancing food needs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the rice stocks stored nationwide can cover the population's needs for a period of between five and seven months in the event of a major disaster affecting the food supply. Datuk Seri Isham Ishak mentioned that there are over 200 million metric tonnes of buffer stock to ensure an adequate supply of rice in the event of emergencies or logistical disruptions due to flooding.
KPKM has identified areas at high risk of flooding and has conducted cleaning and maintenance work on the drainage system through the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) to minimize damage to padi growers and farmers. After officiating the Kemubu Agricultural Development Board 2024 Excellent Service Awards Ceremony, Isham revealed that RM17 million out of a RM20 million allocation has been spent on clearing blocked drainage and removing fallen trees, with the remaining RM3 million earmarked for continued cleaning efforts in flood-prone areas.
Furthermore, KPKM has devised post-flood initiatives to assist farmers in regenerating income through alternative agricultural activities. This includes growing chillies in polybags, which are easier to manage and pose less risk. Isham highlighted that the approach aims to provide more than just temporary financial aid, but also to help flood victims restore their family economy through small-scale agricultural ventures that offer quick returns.
