Kuraman Island Sand Spit Sets Two National Records

Labuan:The natural sand spit on Kuraman Island has achieved two national records in the Malaysia Book of Records, with its total length measuring 808.4 meters and its exposed section measuring 790.4 meters.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the records are titled 'Longest Natural Sand Spit in Malaysia' and 'Longest Exposed Sand Spit in Malaysia'. The certificate acknowledging these achievements was presented to Federal Territories Department director-general Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain during the official declaration ceremony.

Muhammad Azmi highlighted that this recognition is a significant step in promoting Labuan's geological heritage and tourism potential. It aims to elevate the profile of Kuraman Island and the Labuan Geopark on a national level.

Kuraman Island is situated west of Labuan, near Rusukan Besar and Rusukan Kecil islands, and covers approximately 1.47 square kilometers. It is the largest island in the Labuan Marine Park, which was designated in 1994. The island's primary attraction is its natural sand spit, a unique geological formation that extends into the sea, estimated to be about 35 million years old.

The award of the MBR records is based on the measurements of the sand spit's total and exposed lengths. This recognition is expected to enhance the island's attractiveness as a geotourism destination, complementing its marine ecosystem and scenic coastal landscape.

Muhammad Azmi emphasized the importance of responsible tourism development to preserve the island's geological heritage and marine ecosystem. He noted that Kuraman Island is a key geosite within the Labuan Geopark, offering visitors insights into geological history, marine biodiversity, and coastal processes.

He concluded that the recognition would aid in positioning Labuan as a unique tourism destination while ensuring the preservation of the island's natural heritage for future generations.
